CASUAL DOG WALKERS
This is one of the first things that comes to mind when people consider helping us. It should do—this is the area where we need the most help!
Please note first of all that volunteers must be aged 18 or over. Children will not be allowed to walk the dogs, but they can accompany an adult who must remain in complete control at all times and the ratio must be 1 adult to 1 child. The simple procedure is as follows:
- You will have to complete a simple form and register as one of our dog walkers on your first visit. You will need to produce proof of address to complete the registration and a photo ID (current driving licence is ideal). We also ask for mobile telephone numbers at this first meeting which is used if we need to contact dog walkers whilst they are out walking our dogs. A member of staff will run through the ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ with you at this time.
- At Bleakholt we take our duty of care very seriously and we have a constant training programme for our dogs. To prevent any disruption to this training our valuable volunteer dog walkers must attend and complete a simple instructive training session with our resident trainer/behavioural consultant. This consists of correct use of the lead and the handling of our dogs within the sanctuary and surrounding area used for walking. This prevents negative interactions with our other dogs, moving traffic etc. Your safety and that of our dogs is paramount to Bleakholt. This training is free and takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2.15 p.m. or Sundays at 1.30 p.m. and you do not need to book.
- Once the training is completed you will be given a special pass which you will need to bring with you and produce every time you wish to walk a dog. You will also need to bring your photo ID with you every time you wish to walk a dog.
Dog walking is between 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. any day (except Open Days, Christmas Day and New Year Day). All dogs must be back in their kennels for 3.00 p.m. as that is when we start feeding them.
During our busiest periods there can be a waiting list to take dogs out. These periods are usually on Saturday or Sunday which is our busiest period.
If you wish to progress from casual dog walking to a more advanced stage, you will need to attend and successfully complete further training classes.
